It can have a slight effect, it gets us through, but it can not change the world. BUT you are! This many people! Bear with me here, I know I usually keep my personal life out of this blog but I have a story with a moral I want to stress to you all.

My mother has been in the hospital for the past few days. Over the past couple of years, she’s been having bouts where her stomach acid doesn’t work correctly and causes her immense pain but I digress. I’ve been tending to the house while it’s unoccupied. Today, I look out the front window and notice something off in the yard - flower petals strewn about. Sure enough, I look down at the flowerbed underneath the window and all but two of the eight flowers have been completely destroyed and it’s obviousl it was intentionally done.

Now, why are some stupid flowers so important, you ask? My mom loved those flowers. As they bloomed this year, she fawned over them and how pretty they were. Last year, almost every time she’d leave the house, she’d comment on their beauty. She appreciated them. it seemed that, no matter what negativity came around, the flowers were always there as a sign of better times; a symbol heralding positivity, if you will. I know this sounds silly but it’s just the way it was.

And now, the flowers are gone. They were probably ripped out by some kid or teenager trying to seem cool in front of their friends, the lot of them laughing and thinking it was the best thing they’ve ever seen or done. In truth, the perpetrator probably didn’t even stop for a hare of a second to consider the implications that tearing the heads off the flowers (and adding insult to injury, showering the yard with the petals) might have on anyone.

It’ll be a nice sight for my mom to see when she comes back home, what she used to take solace in completely and utterly desecrated.

What I’m saying is: before you do something, think about what you’re doing; think about who it will affect; think about what it might mean, not to you, to the person who’ll be involved with your actions - it’s called empathy. A startling number of people seem to lack it. Actions that may seem miniscule to you might very well come off as cruel and careless to someone else.

We’re all stuck on this rock together. We should treat each other a little better.
